Chimeda - Paddling together- brings an indigenous and a non-indigenous community together, to paddle along a river they share.

Chimeda means we are paddling in Aninishinabeg.  The Chimeda - Paddling together events have brought Anishinabeg people of Kitigan Zibi together with folks living in Wakefield and Chelsea and beyond to paddle the Gatineau River to Ottawa. The communities share the Gatineau watershed, a love for the traditions and culture of paddling, and a love and respect for nature. We wanted to get to know one another, and paddling the river together has been a great way to do it. We've done trips like this since 2013, and have forged deep friendships and alliances along the way.

We have created this website to provide information to other communities who may wish to do a similar kind of trip.  2017 is an important year for Canada. It has been 150 years since confederation, and we, along with many others across the country, are looking to the next 150 years for better, constructive and informed relationships between settlers and indigenous people.  We believe community-based reconciliation has a critical role to play in forging a positive future for everyone in Canada.
